Reach for the Stars

by

Embellished makeup was a big hit on the catwalk for both AW12 and SS13, and with today being Halloween there is no better time to give the look a try. Here’s an easy way to wear the trend, featuring products that you’ll be able to wear the other 364 days of the year, too.

GET THE EYES

This look really focuses on the embellished cheek, so keep the eyes fresh (but fun) with matte shades & metallic liner. Start with an eyeshadow base, like MAC Paint Pot in Bare Study, then buff a matte eyeshadow just slightly darker than your skintone through the lid. Add a darker brown (still matte) through the crease, using a fluffy blending brush (we love the MAC 217 Blending Brush), and highlight the brow bone, again with a matte shade.

Then, for a bit of colour, take a gold liquid eyeliner through your upper lashline and the inner corner of your eyes. We used the LUSH Liquid Eyeliner in Fantasy, from their Emotional Brilliance makeup range, and added it (after a coat of mascara) to the tips of the lashes for an even more ethereal effect.

Finish off the eyes by concealing the undereye area (don’t forget to set with powder!) and adding a quick coat of black mascara. For a little more impact, pull a long-wearing black eyeliner along your waterlines, using an angled liner brush to soften the edges and take it into your lashlines. (Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Shadow Pencil’s are great).

GET THE FACE

To start, prep your skin with a mattifying primer (think Urban Decay De-Slick) to minimize shiny flashback in photos through the night, then follow with a medium-coverage foundation. You’ll want an even base, but not perfection — add concealer sparingly as needed, but only as needed!

Sculpt the cheek with a matte powder, choosing a greyer shade for cool-toned skin and a browner shade for warm-toned skin. (A “cheat” we love at She Said Beauty is to use a matte eyeshadow to contour – it really opens up your colour choices, and it means you’ll only need to carry around one product for touch-ups!)

Finally, add a comfortable, not-too-bold lip to the look. Pick something with a little more oomph than an everyday lip colour, but nothing so bold as a statement lip (We used Korres Cherry Lipgloss in Fuchsia to get a bright, juicy lip that was both long-lasting and moisturising.)

ADDING EMBELLISHMENTS

Believe it or not, the embellishments are the easiest part of this look. Using tweezers, affix stars (or sequins, or hearts… you get the idea) to one of your cheekbones in a random pattern. Go up around to the browbone, down toward the cheek — whatever suits your personality best!

Choose a craft store confetti of varying sizes, from small to large, and use lash glue to keep them secure throughout the evening. To stay picture-perfect all night long, tuck your lash glue into your purse with a few extra sequins & touch up as needed.
