As one of the most prolific Manic Pixie Dream Girl‘s around, actress and singer Zooey Deschanel is as well-known for her beauty as she is her professional career. The star of New Girl and face of Rimmel London is always keen to experiment with different techniques and trends, yet seems to stick to a few beauty rules that end up in the beauty routine in all of her on screen, in concert, or red carpet appearances.

In her own opinion, beauty-wise, she’s all “bangs and eyes”, and we wouldn’t disagree. Zooey’s entire makeup look revolves very heavily around her charismatic personality (it’s there in the eyes!) and a love of vintage starlet-worthy retro style.

Let’s start with skin:

You will never see Ms Deschanel with less than flawless-looking skin. As she is naturally pale and an avoider of any fake baking, she tends to opt for high-coverage matte foundations and adds her ‘glow’ in with a pink-as-pink-comes cream blush. To add definition to her face, Zooey will very rarely use bronzer. Typically, she prefers to concentrate her blush on the apples of her cheek and blend out towards her temples. By avoiding bronzer or contouring, her look is kept very fresh and youthful.

Onto the eyes:

Though we all don’t have Zooey’s sky-blue peepers, we can definitely achieve the same “pop” with a few clever tricks! No matter which eyeshadow the starlet chooses to wear, she is never without three things; highlighter, liquid eyeliner, and false lashes. By highlighting the inner corner of her eye with a pearlescent white eyeshadow, the contrasting thick black eyeliner under fluttering lashes both enlarges and defines her eyes in no time at all.

And we can’t forget hair!

Zooey’s trademark bangs/fringe is maintained to perfection with Oribe shampoo, conditioner, and hairspray. Regardless of the style it is in (though always voluminous), her hair is also always sparkling with shine and reminding us of the cardinal rules of haircare – moisture and protection!

Final thoughts:

For the Zooey Deschanel look, lower-lid eyeliner and love-coloured lips are both a necessity and a playground for experimentation. Have fun with colour, and go frolic!

“I don’t know why femininity should be associated with weakness. Women should be free to express who they are without thinking, I need to act like a man, or I need to tone it down to be successful. That’s a very good way to keep women down.”
