Changing one’s hair colour has always been on a fashion girl’s to-do list. Should I go blonde or brunette this year? Maybe I should try auburn? Highlights, definitely highlights.

The year 2011 brought to us umpteen hair trends for the trying. One of the most intriguing – possibly – was the rainbow hair colours that seemed to pop up on everyone’s head; from the classically punk Avril Lavigne, to the quirky Katy Perry, to the girly Lauren Conrad. Whether a full head of hair colour was lathered into a bright and playful rainbow, or highlights with subtle pastel or neon colours peeked from luscious locks, the trend seemed to take off.

The last twelve months had an abundance of ecstatic and over-the-top starlets more than ready to use their creativity in their fashion and beauty regimes (ahem, Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj). Numerous ladies were pulling out all the stops to one-up another in being the first to try a new look, hair colour, or makeup trend. The one that seemed to stick out the most – let alone easily doable trend – was the rainbow hair. The new colour trend could be as crazy or classy as any person could imagine. There seemed to be no right or wrong when playing around with a multitude of Crayola-like colours.

Are any of you darlings bold enough to take on this trend? As with any natural coloured hair tones, one must keep in mind your skin tone and natural hair colour. For those with fair skin, keep to the pastels such as light pink, lavender and light blue. Darker complexions and brunette hair will pair wonderfully with jewel tones like emerald green, deep purple and burgundy. How far do you want to go? Are you daring enough to try a full head? Or maybe a subtle tip dip is more your style? Perhaps a few peek-a-boo highlights will add some spice to your up-dos and braids?

Whatever your style, whatever your tastes, the rainbow hair trend is surely a rememberable one that happened to be a fun and funky way to express yourself.
